October: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 5, 2009

breast cancer ribbon2Cancer I did not give you the right,
To invade my body and take a bite.
This is my body and with all my might,
I will prevail with one hell of a fight.
To the cancer inside, I will battle and kill.
For that is my body’s God given will.
To my cancer, these words I do send,
Your life is short and near the end.

-A poem contributed by a visitor of
Healing Cancer Naturally

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October since 1985 to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its causes, prevention, and cure.

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease since it differs by individual, age group, and even the kinds of cells within the tumor themselves. A breast cancer diagnosis does not always mean an end – it is the beginning of learning how to fight, getting the facts, and finding hope.

AstraZeneca, the drug manufacturer for breast cancer prescriptions founded the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985; their aim was to promote that regular mammograms were the most effective weapon to fight against breast cancer.

In the United States, in 2009, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors. Women in the USA get breast cancer more than any other type except skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women. Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the USA, and of those 200,000 women, more than 40,000 will die. Approximately 1700 men will also be diagnosed and 450 will die. (Source)

In Canada, in 2009, breast cancer was also the most common cancer among Canadian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). An estimated 22,700 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5400 will die. An estimated 180 men will be diagnosed and 50 will die. On average, 437 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each week, and 104 women will die every week due to the disease. In Canada, the probability of developing breast cancer is 1 in 9 women, and the probability of dying is 1 in 28. (Source)

In an attempt to significantly decrease these devastating statistics, each October races and walks are organized all over the world to raise money for cancer research.  In Canada, “Run for the Cure” is organized in several cities. Sunday October 4, 2009, the “Run for the Cure” was held in the nation’s capital. Volunteer run director, Kelly Fry said the event attracted 8500 people, raising about $1.5 million.

Also throughout the month of October, people host theme parties or “pink days” (where employees wear pink clothing or accessories) to work. The money raised is donated to the organizers’ choice of breast cancer care or research program.

Companies also get involved in the pink ribbon campaign (the international symbol for breast cancer awareness and prevention) by emblazing their products with pink ribbons, the colour pink or otherwise the promise that a portion of the cost is donated to breast cancer awareness and research.

In August of 2008 Bloomex launched a partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. And from that partnership the Give Hope Collection was born. The Give Hope Collection was implemented using 12 of Bloomex’s top-selling products. For each arrangements sold, 10 percent of the proceeds is donated to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of cancer research. Each month there is a featured arrangement, and 15 percent of the proceeds from this product will be donated. Plus each arrangement has a special tag informing the recipient that the sender is a supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society.

The cost of cancer is immeasurable – both in terms of the lives that are affected by the disease and the economic cost of cancer. Bloomex is proud that every dollar donated to the Society through this partnership will help make a difference in the fight against cancer. To date, Bloomex customers have helped raise $35,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Help us find a cure!

Why the Bloomex model works December 4, 2008

Taken from: Financial Post Published: Friday, November 28, 2008

Re: Flower Shop Empire A Bloomin’ Good Idea, Nov. 10.

Cesario Ginjo wants to build a national brand of flower retailers and distributors, according to the CBC show Dragon’s Den and the National Post. His position is that if he could find investors to finance his idea of creating a Canada-wide florist, he could “hit the ground running, open a new location and do $200,000 to $300,000 a year in business.”

This idea would be a unique one, except Bloomex ( bloomex.ca)has already implemented this business concept. Since 2005, Bloomex has been Canada’s largest florist. It has production facilities in seven major Canadian cities — Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. Bloomex is the only Canadian online florist that can deliver to over 97% of the Canadian population from its own production facilities. In the Bloomex model, flowers are bought directly from the growers, eliminating the expensive middleman and overhead expenses. It also reduces transit time from growers to Bloomex production facilities, which equates to fresher flowers that last longer at a better price.

Bloomex has more cost-effective practices by reducing overhead expenses with warehouses, as opposed to store front retail, and passing the savings on to consumers. The Bloomex business model allows us to design and deliver fresh cut flower bouquets at 35%-50% cheaper than traditional florists.

National Florist Gives Hope With Christmas Charity Gift November 21, 2008

On August 15th, 2008, Bloomex announced the launch of the Give Hope Collection, a corporate initiative to support the fight against cancer. For the duration of this campaign, 10 to 15 percent of the sales of 12 individual bouquets will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to support cancer research. Since its inception, only three months ago, Bloomex is proud to report that $10,500.00 has been raised through the sales of the Give Hope Collection.

“We are very pleased with the success of this campaign, still in its infancy. Over $10,000 raised for cancer research is an incredible feat which all of us at Bloomex are proud to be a part of,” says Michelle Robitaille, Public Relations Manager for Bloomex. “We anticipate the remainder of our partnership to be monumental in terms of contributions for cancer research.”

“The staff and volunteers of the Canadian Cancer Society are grateful for the generosity of Bloomex and its customers,” says Lesley Ring, Director, Corporate Development, Canadian Cancer Society. “Progress against cancer is made one donation at a time and the proceeds from the Give Hope Collection will help support Canada’s best cancer research and make a real difference in our efforts in the fight against cancer.”

Bloomex projects that the holiday season will yield an increase in sales of the Give Hope Collection, resulting in an increased donation to the Cancer Society. Bloomex has been so impressed at the consumer response to the Give Hope Collection, that it has introduced a special gift basket for the holiday season. The newly designed basket, named Give Hope Basket, will feature an assortment of premium quality cookies, candies and holiday snacks. Bloomex has announced that 20 per cent of the sales of the Give Hope Basket will be donated for cancer research. The Canadian Cancer Society and Bloomex have introduced a way for Canadians to make a difference while sending their holiday gifts. The entire give hope collection can be found at bloomex.ca/give-hope. The Give Hope Basket will officially be launched on November 20th and end Dec. 31st, 2008.

Bloomex Innovation Is Dragon Den’s Misinformation November 21, 2008

OTTAWA November 14th, 2008 -Cesario Ginjo pitched an idea to the Dragon’s Den with implementation of a new concept; he wants to build a national brand of flower retailers and distributors according to the CBC Dragon’s Den and the National Post. His position is that if he could find investors to finance his idea of creating a Canada wide florist, he can “hit the ground running, open a new location and do $200,000 to $300,000 a year in business.”

To quote Mr. Ginjo: “With that base of sales you have the volume and the buying power to compete with the entire market. It would be like a chain store coming into the market. If you start plopping stores in seven to eight major locations in Canada, which is my idea. Now you can say, “We are a national brand.”

This idea would be a unique one, except Bloomex has already implemented this business concept since 2005. Bloomex is Canada’s largest florist. It has production facilities in 7 major Canadian cities, located in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. Bloomex is the only Canadian online florist that can deliver to over 97% of the Canadian population from it’s own production facilities. President of Bloomex, Dimitri Lokhonia who has been in the flower industry for over 9 years, adapted the Bloomex business model after noticing a similar model being used successfully in the U.S.. He began with a store front flower shop in Toronto, but Mr. Lokhonia wanted to introduce a new idea to the floral industry, one completely different than even FTD, and unique to Canada. Bloomex business model is to buy the flowers directly from the growers, which eliminates the expensive middleman and overhead expenses. It also reduces transit time from growers directly to Bloomex production facilities, which equates to fresher flowers that last longer at a better price. Bloomex has more cost effective practices by reducing overhead expenses with warehouses as oppose to store front retail, passing the savings on to consumers. The Bloomex business model allows them to design and deliver fresh cut flower bouquets at 35-50% cheaper than traditional florists. Orders can be placed via Bloomex’ secure online store http://bloomex.ca, or by their toll free number, 1-866-91-BLOOM.

This episode of the Dragon’s Den, which aired on Monday Nov. 3rd, 2008 heard Cesario Ginjo propose his business plan to the 5 moguls by beginning with, “So today, you cannot buy flowers in any major city in Canada and get the same product over and over”. When asked by one of the moguls, “There’s nothing equivalent in Canada?” Cesario replied “No”. As a national Canadian florist, with a consistent supply chain to all company owned facilities, Bloomex provides the same products and services from coast to coast.

Mr. Treliving of the Dragon’s Den responds to this proposal with, “We can’t be in a situation where we are a startup thinking it might work. We should be taking this to another level. It’s eight years old and hasn’t taken off. Why? Is it a great idea and it’s a small business or is it a great idea and a big business? That’s what the due diligence will tell us.” Bloomex can state that it is a great idea and a big business; their success in the past 2 years has shown that there is a demand for a Canadian online florist providing fresh cut flowers at better prices.

Bloomex Public Relations Manager, Michelle Robitaille comments, “We are outraged that no research was done to recognize Bloomex’s presence in this industry, being we are the largest and fastest growing florist in Canada whose continued growth is attributed to our patented F3 Fresh Flower Formula business model. Our unique model means we don’t have to “Rape and Pillage”. Our extensive contributions to a national charity like the Canadian Cancer Society have demonstrated that Bloomex is Canada’s floral preference. We welcome the challenge of others attempting to market a brand superior to Bloomex.”

Since Bloomex’s introduction to the market in 2005, they have bloomed to a staggering 200% sales increase just in the past 6 months. It has opened 4 new production facilities across the country, 2 of those facilities in Halifax and Winnipeg opened this past summer. They anticipate the opening of 3 new locations within the year. Bloomex had also launched a Flowers Wholesale division, which enables the general public to purchase bulk flowers for weddings, events, etc at a fraction of the regular price. Bloomex is the only Canadian wholesale florist that sells directly to consumers. Bloomex also has a wedding division of professional floral designers, arranging beautiful wedding flowers at practical prices.

New Wedding Flower Division June 4, 2008

Wedding Flowers, a division of Bloomex, was launched in September 2007, when Bloomex management found there was a large market for wedding flowers.

The core strategy behind Bloomex Weddings is similar to that of Bloomex.ca, in that it offers a vast variety of freshly cut flowers, bouquets and flower arrangements at up to 80% off market prices. The site is specially designed to enable the consumer to view numerous styles, colors and arrangement of flowers for their special day. The Wedding Flowers website is easy to navigate, very user friendly, which included a wedding flower image gallery and related information. The site also included advance features such as Designer Collection packages, live support and free flower design consultants available to help in the selection and cultivation of the perfect arrangement.

The Bloomex management team found that in the past the majority of these consumers would purchase from local florists that would offer a modest discount for large orders of flowers, and depending on the size of the order, the traditional florist often would be unable to service the consumer, and certainly would be limited to custom arrangements at such a high volume. As well, many small local florists would deal with several wholesalers for their flowers, some wholesalers being American, which would have the flowers in transit for many days, losing its freshness. As well, traditional florist often require up to a years notice for wedding flower collections.

Wedding Flowers from Bloomex is able to create and deliver your custom orders in as little as 30 days, directly from the fields, to our floral design specialist to your door, just one more way that Bloomex is revolutionizing the floral market to better serve the consumer.

Is my home killing me? June 4, 2008

How Typical Houseplants Can Help

Almost all plants act as air cleaners, they filter out the pollutants from the air and convert it to pure oxygen through a process called photosynthesis. In our homes, there are several harsh chemical pollutants that inhibit us humans from breathing in fresh clean air, commonly found in today’s homes are benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene (TCE).

Benzene:

Benzene is a colorless gas and is one of the many chemicals that make up gasoline and is found in tobacco smoke, gasoline, inks, oils, paint, plastic, and rubber. A known carcinogen, benzene can cause drowsiness, dizziness, headaches and vomiting. Leukemia is the form of cancer most commonly associated with benzene exposure. About 90 percent of airborne benzene results from gasoline.

Plants that remove benzene are: Bamboo Palm, Gerbera Daisies, Peace Lilies, Chrysanthemum, Snake Plant, etc.

Formaldehyde:

Formaldehyde has been used in construction and manufacturing for more than 100 years, but only in the last decade have studies linked the gas to nasal cancer in laboratory animals. Formaldehyde is found in virtually in all indoor environments. Many cleaning products also contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde fumes can also cause chronic respiratory problems, dizziness, rashes, lethargy and nausea. According to Dr. Bill Wolverton, senior research scientist at NASA, ”About 15 to 20 plants should completely remove the formaldehyde from an 1,800-square-foot house.”

Research from NASA show that the leaves of certain plants reduce formaldehyde gases up to 80%. Some of these plants are Spider Plant, philodendrons, Peace Lilies, Snake Plants, etc.

Trichloroethylene (TCE):

Trichloroethylene has a wide variety of industrial uses. It is used in inks, paints, varnishes, and adhesives. Plants that remove trichloroethylene are: Peace lilies, Gerbera daisies, Chrysanthemum, Bamboo Palm, etc.

The easiest and most effective way to reduce these harmful pathogens from our house and office air is to have fresh plants throughout. Plants have a much larger role in our world other than “looking pretty”, with the growing increase of cancers and cancer related illnesses, it is our responsibility to take what Mother Nature has given us to combat detrimental airborne gases and solvents from affecting our health further. Let’s all pollute our houses and offices with plants, while helping the environment!
